Muscle cars are good at a few things: tearing ass, making great sounds, and going fast in a straight line, mostly. The idea that somehow the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! great is preposterous. The same gains that were being made in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! s just weren't met with same innovation in the areas of suspension, braking, and chassis design.

However, it did mark a turning point in American automobile design. At some point engineers realized they were going to start killing people if they didn't make sure the cars could also turn a corner and brake. Drum brakes just weren't going to cut it with 450 bhp under the hood:
Cast your horrified gaze upon the drum brake!
It only took 30 more years past that point for them to actually start doing that well, but that's another post for another day (I can get very worked up about the malaise era). Whether or not their driving dyamics were shit or not, there sure were some beautiful cars from the golden age of the muscle car:
Here's the ultimate question of this series: what is the best muscle car of all time? I don't don't mean the flat out best, I mean the best all things considered (including price).

69 Z/28, didn't have the tourqe of a big block motor, but it was probably the best all around car. Great suspension, a motor that would rev to the stratosphere. When optioned with the cross ram induction, JL8 4 wheel disc brakes and a set of 4:56 or 4:88 rear gears to use the the power and you had quite the muscle car. This is one of those blurred lines of what's a muscle car vs a pony car

Another blurred lines car that could be the best.
1967 L88 Corvette
Baddest 427 made stuck in the 4 wheel independent suspension chassis of the beautiful C2 Vette a d you had a powerful combo. So powerful Chevy tricked most people out buying one.

I'm sure it works quite well, probably better than a bad disc setup, but it's mechanically complex and broadly terrifying.

I think 442s are probably the best; all things considered. They're price is reasonable compared to something like an SS — and they're rarer too.
Their handling package helps more than you would think, while still being comfortable. While it doesn't handle good; it keeps it more predictable than it's competitors.
Other pros are monster torque, awesome styling (especially with the W25 hood), good aftermarket and a upscale interior (compared to others).
Only problem would be finding a manual cheaply, but the TH400 is more than adequate.

I'm a lifelong 442 fan. It gives me the most pants fizzing of all of the muscle cars.
